About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Legal Practitioner to join our team at the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for providing expert legal services to our clients, particularly in the area of criminal law.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Providing high-level client services in criminal law proceedings
  • Ensuring exemplary case management standards
  • Working closely with our Principal Legal Officer and Director of Law (Criminal Law) to provide expert information to clients and external stakeholders
  • Developing and maintaining strong relationships with our clients and stakeholders

Selection Criteria:

  • Alignment to the values and vision of ATSILS and an appreciation of and sensitivity to the challenges our clients have faced
  • Admission as a Legal Practitioner within the State of Queensland or holder of (or eligibility for immediate acquisition of) a current Practising Certificate
  • Capacity to provide high-level client services in criminal law proceedings, while ensuring exemplary case management standards
  • Proven high level of professional service in all aspects of criminal law, with both adult and youth jurisdictions
  • Confidence in and knowledge of legislation, including the Youth Justice Act 1992 and the Criminal Code 1899
  • Preparedness to work after hours if necessary, and willingness to assist in the development of Court Support/Field Officers' and other staff members' training/education

Desirable Criteria:

  • Ability to use Microsoft Office in a Windows networked environment
  • Willingness to undergo a Criminal Record Check to achieve a National Police Certificate
