Criminal Law Specialist

About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Criminal Law Specialist to join our team at the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service. As a key member of our legal team, you will provide expert information and support to clients and external stakeholders, working closely with our Principal Legal Officer and Director of Law (Criminal Law).
Key Responsibilities
- Provide high-level client services in Criminal Law proceedings, ensuring exemplary case management standards.
- Work closely with the Principal Legal Officer and Director of Law (Criminal Law) to provide expert information and support to clients and external stakeholders.
- Develop and maintain a strong understanding of the Youth Justice Act 1992 and the Criminal Code 1899, as amended.
- Collaborate with other staff members to develop Court Support/Field Officers' and other staff members' training/education.
Selection Criteria
- Alignment to the values and vision of ATSILS and an appreciation of and sensitivity to the challenges our clients have faced, and continue to face, in their fight for and their right to justice and equity.
- Admission as a Legal Practitioner within the State of Queensland or holder of (or eligibility for immediate acquisition of) a current Practising Certificate.
- Capacity to provide both high-level client services in Criminal Law proceedings; whilst ensuring exemplary case management standards.
- Proven high level of professional service in all aspects of Criminal Law – with both adult and youth jurisdictions; a demonstrated knowledge of diversionary alternatives available to Police/Magistrates/Judges.
- Confidence in and knowledge of legislation: an in-depth working knowledge of the Youth Justice Act 1992, (as amended) and the Criminal Code 1899, (as amended).
- Access, teamwork and communication: preparedness to work after hours if necessary; willingness to assist in the development of Court Support/Field Officers' and other staff members' training/education; sound interpersonal and communication skills.
Desirable Criteria
- Ability to use Microsoft Office in a Windows networked environment.
- Mobility, access and safety: a current Queensland Driver Licence and willingness to travel by air and road may be required for the role, dependent upon the location; a willingness to undergo a Criminal Record Check to achieve a National Police Certificate (Australia-wide Disclosable Criminal History).

ATSILS is a not-for-profit, community-based organisation that delivers innovative, professional criminal, civil and family law services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients throughout Queensland. We are 50 years old, and have 300 staff including a specialist Through Care service to complement our legal services. We are fully government funded, and this Legal role is tied to ongoing funding, currently set to 30 June 2025.
