The Role

As a software engineer, you'll work on domestic account-to-account payment infrastructure in Australia and New Zealand. This role owns systems that power direct transfers between bank accounts.

You'll contribute to services supporting real-time payments, direct debits and credits, and settlements, all built with security, reliability, and scalability in mind. Our architecture consists of event-driven service-oriented services and monoliths; you'll participate in new capabilities and ongoing refinement of existing systems.

Collaborate closely with engineers, product managers, and operations to design clean interfaces, write well-tested code, and support systems in production. The work is deeply tied to financial flows — complex, high-trust, and highly rewarding.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design backend services powering payment flows, focusing on security, scalability, reliability, and regulatory compliance.
  • Participate in the development lifecycle from architecture and design through implementation, testing, deployment, and operations.
  • Write well-tested, maintainable code supporting long-term system health and developer productivity.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues across services, contributing to incident response and participating in on-call rotations.
  • Document and share knowledge to help others navigate our payments ecosystem.
  • Collaborate across teams to shape product direction, define requirements, and deliver solutions.
About You
  • You have a deep understanding of payment systems.
  • You have 3+ years of experience as a software engineer, ideally building backend services in a production environment.
  • You're comfortable working with programming languages such as Ruby, Typescript, or Go, and confident picking up new languages and tools as needed.
  • You have a strong foundation in software engineering principles: writing maintainable code, designing clean interfaces, and building observable, testable, and resilient systems.
  • You're familiar with event-driven architecture and service-oriented systems, and understand the tradeoffs of working with distributed components and shared state.
  • You take ownership of your work, follow through on commitments, and actively contribute to a culture of reliability, safety, and continuous improvement.
