Job Title: Shipping Manager

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Shipping Manager to join our team at the Science and Technology Facilities Council. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and overseeing the shipping and customs functions at our Rutherford Appleton Laboratory site.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that daily and weekly shipping activities are discharged efficiently and timely.
  • Manage and oversee the processing and dispatch of all hazardous materials.
  • Provide specialist knowledge and support to the team.
  • Respond to complex shipping requirements relating to Customs compliance.
  • Manage shipping activities in line with agreed service levels.
  • Respond to escalated customer queries and provide resolution.
  • Discharge the role of Radioactive Substance Dispatcher.
  • Manage and maintain reporting information in relation to all aspects of shipping operation.
  • Assist other STFC sites with complex shipping and customs issues.
  • Develop, manage and maintain standard operating processes.
  • Ensure professional qualifications and mandatory training is kept up to date.
  • Undertake additional duties at the request of line managers.
  • Participate in operational meetings.

Line Management:

  • Provide consistent performance management and supervision to direct reports.
  • Provide regular feedback to staff, undertake one-to-ones and conduct appraisals.

Financial and Administration:

  • Retrain records and data efficiently.
  • Liaise with Logistics Administration to ensure that invoices are up to date.
  • Manage and oversee correct recording of imports and exports.

Person Specification:

  • Level 3 (HNC or equivalent) qualifications, or other equivalent experience.
  • Clean current UK driving license.
  • Dangerous goods qualification.
  • Customs certification/qualification.

Desirable:

  • Health and Safety qualification (e.g. IOSH).
  • Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser (SQA).

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Proven shipping and logistics expertise.
  • Proven experience of Dangerous Goods handling and documentation.
  • Industry and supplier management of despatch and courier suppliers.
  • Ability to simplify complex customs/shipping requirements.
  • High level of literacy and numeracy.
  • Confident user of Microsoft Office.
  • Relevant Health and Safety knowledge and awareness.
  • Financial management systems knowledge.
