Police Dog Development Officer

This role is responsible for the training and development of police dogs. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of animal husbandry and dog training, with the ability to condition and focus the genetic drives of pups and dogs.

The successful applicant will be based at the Brisbane Dog Squad Complex, where they will work closely with other teams to develop recruit dogs for operational use. They will also support breeding and foster care programs, as well as maintain currency and knowledge of contemporary dog training and development theories.

Key Accountabilities:
  • Breeding and Whelping: Support the breeding and whelping of dogs, ensuring that pups are healthy and thriving.
  • Development: Condition and focus the genetic drives of pups and dogs to meet operational needs.
  • Knowledge and Currency: Maintain currency and knowledge of contemporary dog training and development theories.
  • Evaluation: Monitor and evaluate the development of pups and dogs who are candidates for operational work.
  • Advice and Assistance: Provide advice and assistance to foster carers involved in the canine foster care program, and monitor and evaluate foster care policies concerning the treatment and handling of pups.
  • Assessment: Assist with the assessment of potential police dogs offered to the service, or to be purchased, as to their suitability to perform operational duties.
  • Maintenance: Maintain dog development aides and create accurate records of animals in the service.
  • Compliance: Comply with Police Dog Training Unit Standing Orders.
Requirements:
  • Qualifications: Qualifications or extensive practical experience in animal husbandry and/or dog training would be highly regarded.
