Housing/Shelter Support Worker Role Overview

This position is available to all qualified applicants.

The Housing/Shelter Support Worker reports to the Site Supervisor and Team Lead. They participate in identifying clients' problems, needs, and risks. The worker plans and conducts individual counselling sessions using various techniques. They provide specific basic life skills building in problem areas. The worker is directly involved in engaging residents/shelter users and providing services from intake procedures and programs to help them succeed in their goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Assist with resident support plan development and delivery of services in collaboration with the Team Lead/Site Supervisor and support team if applicable.
  2. Develop rapport and trusting yet professional relationships with residents.
  3. Perform wellness checks.
  4. Participate in setting up shelters upon arrival and cleaning before shifts end.
  5. Distribute harm reduction supplies, personal hygiene items, cleaning supplies, meals, etc. to residents.
  6. Assist residents with activities like room cleans; clean out vacant rooms.
  7. Help with appropriate applications and referrals for shelter users.
  8. Develop short-term intervention plans within program guidelines using one-on-one support, consulting the Site Supervisor, or outside agencies.
  9. Evaluate intervention plan effectiveness, report on clients' progress, and discuss concerns with the Supervisor to resolve identified problems and move towards objectives.
  10. Gather information relevant to clients' problems, needs, and risks through interviews, observations, meetings with service providers, and inventories.
  11. Plan, prepare, and conduct individual counselling sessions using techniques like active listening, conflict resolution, and psycho-educational group methods to resolve identified problems, needs, and risks.
  12. Maintain an active file for each assigned resident, including electronic log notes for interactions and observations.
  13. Outline services provided by the program and refer shelter users to community service providers, resources, and professionals as needed.
  14. Use various influential techniques guided by social work standards and methods to support resistant clients.
  15. Assist with laundry tasks and maintain on-site laundry facilities.
  16. Support residents in developing independent life skills like household management, medication management, socialization, money management, decision-making, time management, etc.
  17. Maintain knowledge of laws and legislation affecting shelter users, such as the Mental Health Act and Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction policies.
  18. Utilize de-escalation skills to mitigate challenging situations and maintain a safe environment.
  19. Maintain professional boundaries while displaying empathy and compassion.
  20. Respond to medical emergencies, including overdoses, and administer first aid when necessary.
  21. Liaise with partner agencies and other professionals/support teams.
  22. Accompany shelter users to meetings and appointments as required.
  23. Complete incident reports according to procedure.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Basic computer skills with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Training in non-violent crisis intervention techniques and harm reduction approach.
  • Knowledge of services available to shelter users and community resources.
  • Ability to work independently and show initiative and creativity.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients and coworkers both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work in an intense and challenging work environment.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Ability to navigate stairs and be on feet for up to 6 hours of shift.
  • Ability to kneel down to attend to overdoses and other medical emergencies.

Benefits:

This full-time position offers a competitive hourly rate and comprehensive benefits package. Vacation accrues at a rate of 6% per year. Please note that this position requires union membership.
