PhD Scholarships Opportunity

We are seeking highly motivated PhD candidates to participate in an Australian Research Council funded project. This interdisciplinary research project aims to explore the new African diaspora in Australia and its engagement with Pentecostalism, particularly after arrival.

The project will focus on four key areas:

  • Understanding Challenges Faced by African-Australian Communities
  • Determining Why Many Community Members Join Pentecostal Churches
  • Investigating How Pentecostal Churches Support Translocal and Transnational Mobility and Sense of Belonging
  • Contribution to Policy Efforts Improving Outcomes for African New Arrivals in Australia

As a PhD candidate, you will conduct ethnographic research with Pentecostal churches in Australia and with African diasporas in the country. You will investigate questions such as:

  • How Do Pentecostal Churches Support or Hinder Settlement and Integration Processes?
  • How Do Some Megachurches Generate Transnational Religious Fields?
  • What Impact Does This Have on Australian Cities' Post-Secular Social Landscapes?

Applicants from various backgrounds, including anthropology, sociology, religious studies, African studies, migration studies, or related fields are welcome. The project is suitable for candidates interested in the intersections of migration and religion, especially those of African heritage.
