Senior Lawyer Role

The Senior Lawyer serves as a key advisor to the Director of Legal and Integrity at the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (FCFCOA) in delivering timely and strategic legal guidance on workplace law and WHS matters, complaints/investigations, constitutional law, and other complex issues.

As part of the team, this role supports the Chief Executive Officer and Principal Registrar (CEO/PR) in staff management and the Chief Justice on business and administration of the Courts.

  • Provides high-level legal, strategic, and management counsel to the Executive Management of the Courts;
  • Assists in handling complaints against Registrars and staff, and judicial complaints;
  • Ensures effective and efficient processes within the Court, adhering to statutory and administrative guidelines;
  • Collaborates with the Federal Court of Australia Agency's People and Culture Section for human resources support;
  • Proactively identifies legal and regulatory challenges and develops solutions.

Key qualifications include:

  • Tertiary qualification in law and admission as a practitioner of the High Court and/or the Supreme Court of a State or Territory of Australia;
  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a legal practitioner or in-house counsel, legal officer, or equivalent position within the private or public sector;
  • Experience in labour law and workplace relations is highly beneficial.

Essential selection criteria include:

  • Demonstrated ability to provide expert legal advice and strategies for complex and sensitive matters;
  • Capacity to work in a discreet environment requiring tact and diplomacy;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Effective organisational skills and ability to evaluate large volumes of information;
  • Interpersonal, liaison, and negotiation skills;
  • Broad understanding of Federal civil jurisdictions and relevant legislation.
