Bequests Project Manager Role

The Bequests Project Manager plays a key role in creating opportunities for the promotion, dispersal and sale of non-accessioned works of art gifted to an esteemed arts institution.

Key Responsibilities:
  • In collaboration with senior management, develop a strategy for dispersing works through gifts, exhibition sales and auctions, thereby maximizing their value and exposure.
  • Efficaciously coordinate the handling, exhibition, storage, care and onwards dispersal of non-accessioned works of art gifted to the institution, ensuring their preservation and protection.
  • Coordinate the cataloguing and documentation of non-accessioned gifts and bequest items to ensure best practice is achieved, and their ownership and provenance are accurately recorded.
  • Direct effective stock management of non-accessioned works of art, maintaining accurate records of their condition, location and availability.
  • Manage the rationalisation of gifts and bequests for transfer to other collections, working closely with colleagues to achieve this goal.
  • Directly preserve artworks to ensure gifted items are in the best condition for onward exhibition, gift or sale, adhering to rigorous standards of conservation and restoration.
  • Coordinate the institution's storage site and direct art handling procedures, ensuring that all artwork is handled with the utmost care and respect.
  • Work with marketing colleagues to best assist artist profile and legacy development, promoting the work of living artists and showcasing the institution's collection.
  • Liaise with other collections, commercial galleries and auctioneers to explore opportunities for non-accessioned works of art held by the institution.
  • Coordinate gifts of non-accessioned artworks to other collections, fostering partnerships and collaborations that benefit both parties.
  • Manage exhibitions at partner galleries and museums, working closely with curators and other stakeholders to deliver high-quality displays.
  • Collate, manage and document the consignment of artworks to partner galleries and museums, ensuring accurate records are kept and transactions are processed efficiently.
  • Oversee information management, digitisation, image processing and preservation of non-accessioned works in line with requirements, ensuring they are accessible and usable for future generations.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of an income strategy for the wider commercial opportunities available to enhance the non-accessioned gifts dispersal, maximising revenue and impact.
