Hardware Sustaining Engineer Job Summary

This role plays a pivotal part in supporting and maintaining existing hardware products throughout their lifecycle.

  • Provides engineering support for released hardware products across their lifespan.
  • Investigates, troubleshoots, and resolves hardware failures in production, field, and customer environments.
  • Develops and implements engineering change orders/product change notices to address design improvements, manufacturing improvements, and component obsolescence.
  • Supports supply chain evaluation of alternate components and management of end-of-life parts.
Key Responsibilities
  • Product Support & Maintenance:
    • Offers engineering assistance for released hardware products throughout their lifecycle.
    • Analyzes and resolves hardware failures in production, field, and customer settings.
    • Establishes and implements engineering change orders/product change notices addressing design enhancements, manufacturing upgrades, and component updates.
    • Collaborates with the supply chain in evaluating alternative components and overseeing end-of-life parts.
  • Manufacturing & Quality Interface:
    • Collaborates with manufacturing teams to resolve build and test issues.
    • Participates in failure analysis, root cause identification, and corrective/preventive actions (CAPA).
    • Works with design engineering and quality teams to maintain compliance with applicable safety, regulatory, and industry standards.
  • Product Documentation:
    • Maintains and updates design documentation, schematics, BOMs, and test procedures.
    • Validates and verifies design changes through lab testing and simulations.
    • Defines test plans for verification of new designs.
    Requirements
    • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field.
    • 3-7 years of experience in hardware design, sustaining engineering, or manufacturing support.
    • Strong knowledge of analog/digital electronics, PCB design, and system-level troubleshooting.
    • Experience with lab equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power analyzers, etc.).
    • Familiarity with industry standards (UL, FCC, CE, ISO, etc.).
    • Strong problem-solving and root-cause analysis skills.
    • Excellent communication skills for cross-team collaboration and reporting.
    Preferred Skills
    • Experience with Python and manufacturing test scripting.
    • Conducting DVT and reliability testing.
    • Knowledge of supply chain and component lifecycle management.
    • Hands-on experience with CAD tools (e.g., Altium, OrCAD) and PLM systems.
    • Ability to work in fast-paced, cross-disciplinary environments.
