Melbourne, Victoria, Australia PlayHQ Full time
About the Role

This is a Graduate Data Scientist position with one of the leading companies in Australia, PlayHQ, with an amazing team. They are continuing to grow rapidly. This is the chance to join right as the company takes off.

More About the Role at PlayHQ

We are growing fast, and are looking for a Melbourne-based Graduate Data Scientist to join our team. The role will report to the Data Science Lead and collaborate with colleagues from across the PlayHQ business, including Product, Engineering, Finance and Community. Your primary responsibility will be to support in the development of data products that enable both internal and external stakeholders – on any given day, you might be:

  • Refactoring a model on our first-party data platform, using dbt, Snowflake, Tableau or Fivetran
  • Analysing user behaviour to help our Product team determine whether a new feature release was successful
  • Running some SQL queries for the Finance team to calculate an invoice
  • Throwing together a quick Python script that polls data from a third-party website
  • Defining success metrics with our Community team and building dashboards to track these over time
  • Working with our Engineering team to design a data pipeline from a new service into our data platform
  • Running regressions and writing up analyses over participant churn and retention to inform our longer-term product strategy

What We Are Looking For

We are looking for someone with:

  • Experience with data querying languages (e.g. SQL), programming languages (e.g. Python, Golang), and/or statistical/mathematical software (e.g. R)
  • A good understanding of the principles of data analysis, including exploratory data analysis, data cleaning and transformation, visualisation and transformation
  • Knowledge of key statistical concepts (e.g. regressions, A/B tests, clustering, probability) and how they can be applied to business problems
  • Basic knowledge of machine learning techniques and algorithms
  • Some familiarity with cloud-based technologies, infrastructure and databases

About You

We are looking for someone who:

  • Loves working with data and everything that entails: staring at spreadsheets, obsessing over small details, backing out explanations from observations of complex systems
  • Has strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and loves tackling difficult problems from first principles
  • Communicates clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, and is diligent in closing the loop
  • Is effective at time management and is comfortable multitasking and delivering to schedules
  • Believes in our mission and the importance of community sport
  • Is comfortable working under conditions of uncertainty – we are still a startup at heart so we move quickly and are driven by outcomes, not processes
  • Is in their final year or has completed a degree in engineering, data science, or computer science, or an equivalent technical qualification (with less than 12 months of professional experience in these fields)

What We Offer

We offer a dynamic and supportive work environment, with opportunities for growth and development. If you don't think you're a perfect fit, you should still sign up to Hatch and create a profile, we'll match you to other roles that suit your profile.

We do not discriminate on the basis of gender identity, sexual orientation, cultural identity, disability, age, or any other non-merit factors. To put it simply, Hatch is for everyone.
