Conservation and Spatial Data Specialist

About the Role

The Conservation and Spatial Data Specialist will play a key role in supporting the success of V/Line's People, Risk, Safety & Sustainability Group. This position will enable V/Line to set ambitious but achievable goals regarding environmental sustainability, biodiversity, and heritage.

The Conservation and Spatial Data Specialist will perform environmental spatial data mapping and analysis within V/Line's GIS, including spatial data analysis relating to climate risk and adaptation. Key accountabilities include:

  • Supporting conservation projects and initiatives across the organisation
  • Coordinating site visits and surveys to identify biodiversity opportunities and engaging with staff on-site
  • Identifying and applying for grants and applications for conservation uplift projects, submissions, and recognition
  • Engaging with internal and external stakeholders to support conservation uplift initiatives and embed environmental best practice
  • Providing advice on conservation and natural resource management to the V/Line community
  • Interfacing with communications teams to produce collateral and related media
  • Managing environmental spatial data sets and providing mapping and spatial data interpretation
  • Maintaining environmental data sets
  • Supporting alignment with State and Federal conservation strategies and objectives
  • Preparing environmental reporting and documentation related to conservation, natural resource management, and climate adaptation
  • Supporting the development and delivery of conservation action planning
  • Supporting environmental audits and investigations
About You

The successful candidate will report to the Manager Biodiversity and Heritage Programs. They will support the development and delivery of conservation activities, notably through the Conservation Uplift Action Plan. The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Bachelor's or higher degree in environmental science, environmental management, geography, science (geospatial), environmental engineering or a relevant field (mandatory)
  • Foundational understanding of spatial data management and systems, preferably with ARC GIS
  • Understanding of conservation and natural resource management concepts
  • Strong analytical thinking and data management ability
  • Strong communication and engagement skills
  • Strong attention to detail and quality of work
  • Passion for positive conservation outcomes
  • Collaborative and inclusive, able to work with diverse stakeholders across the organisation
  • Ethical and trustworthy with handling of sensitive data
  • Strong customer focus and commitment to value for internal and external stakeholders
  • Current Driver's license
  • Demonstrated alignment with V/Line values: responsiveness, integrity, impartiality, accountability, respect, leadership, and human rights

This role requires some travel and on-site work across the V/Line rail network. The primary office location will be Melbourne CBD. This role is a Medical Category 3 position.
