**Job Summary**

We are seeking a skilled Mechanic for Heavy Equipment and Vehicles to join our team at the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. The selected candidate will be responsible for diagnosing and repairing faulty vehicle and equipment operation, as well as conducting NYS inspections.

About the Role:

  • Diagnose and correct causes of faulty vehicle and equipment operation
  • Overhaul, adjust, and repair gaseous fuel engines, clutches, transmissions, and differentials
  • Conduct NYS inspections and oversee maintenance of heavy equipment and vehicles
  • Collaborate with other teams to ensure effective use of department fleet management software and DOT electronic systems
  • Participate in emergency response situations as part of the Incident Command System

Responsibilities:

  1. Perform routine maintenance and repairs on heavy equipment and vehicles
  2. Test drive equipment and conduct thorough inspections to identify potential issues
  3. Complete reports using parts catalogs and manage repair schedules and parts stock effectively
  4. Provide technical expertise to colleagues and support the development of best practices within the department

Requirements:

  • Four years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic, or an Associate's degree in automotive or diesel repair technology
  • Ability to obtain a valid NYS Inspection Certification and a valid New York State Class B Commercial Driver's License with no air brake restriction within one year of appointment
  • Pass a pre-employment physical/medical examination and drug test prior to beginning employment
