About The Role

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions is seeking a Senior Legal Officer to join their team.

Job Description

  • The Senior Legal Officer will be responsible for preparing complex matters referred to prosecution, effectively managing relationships with stakeholders, and appearing as an advocate to prosecute or defend appeals in the District Court and higher courts.
  • They will also supervise, motivate and lead legal officers and legal support staff in the delivery of legal services, and actively engage in activities aimed at improving work processes.

Mandatory Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate must be admitted as a Legal Practitioner in a State or Territory of Australia.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Preparing complex matters referred to prosecution (including appeal submissions)
  • Effectively managing relationships with stakeholders, including defence counsel, solicitors, police officers, victims and witnesses
  • Appearing as an advocate to prosecute or defend appeals in the District Court, sentences in the Magistrates and/or higher courts
  • Liaising with complainants and relatives in prosecutions especially in relation to matters involving sexual and violent offences
  • Supervising, motivating and leading legal officers and legal support staff in the delivery of legal services

Requirements

  • The ability to apply legal principles, draft legal documents and provide legal advice as a litigation solicitor, and work effectively as an advocate in the Magistrates and/or higher courts.
  • The ability to apply well-developed interpersonal and communication skills to liaise, consult and negotiate with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • The ability to supervise, train and mentor legal and support staff to achieve outcomes and demonstrates an ability to identify and address the needs of victims of crime in a trauma-informed and culturally sensitive way.
