Site Reliability Engineer

About the Role
The Site Reliability Engineer at Shell Energy will be responsible for building and maintaining information technology systems and infrastructure. This role is crucial in ensuring that our IT systems operate effectively, securely, and reliably to support the smooth functioning of business operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the day-to-day operation of IT systems, including monitoring security, performance, and availability, and ensuring incidents are triaged quickly and prioritized according to impact and urgency.
- Contribute to the implementation of engineering solutions, adhering to security, compliance, and engineering standards, and providing documentation to guide development teams.
- Ensure system security by developing software solutions in accordance with Shell guidelines, such as firewalls, antivirus software, and access controls.
- Create and maintain technical documentation, such as system configurations, user manuals, and standard operating procedures.
- Work closely with development teams to enhance logging, monitoring, observability, and metrics that clearly articulate service behaviors.
- Participate in system design and implementation, and work with stakeholders to define and implement SLAs, SLOs, and SLIs.
- Demonstrate a clear understanding of automation frameworks and write automation scripts to eliminate toil and reduce technical debt.
- Be involved in triaging application incidents and work with squads to resolve incidents, ensuring systems return to an operational state.
Requirements
- Experienced in one or more programming languages, software design patterns, development methodologies, version control systems, and continuous integration/continuous deployment practices.
- Experience using cloud platforms, including AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform, and knowledge of cloud services, deployment models, and best practices for cloud architecture and management.
- Practical experience in configuring and maintaining hosted and cloud-native applications, and proficiency in instrumenting systems using tools like Open Telemetry and setting up monitoring and observability using DataDog and alerting using PagerDuty.
- A knowledge of IT service management frameworks, such as ITIL, COBIT, and service delivery processes, facilitates effective IT service delivery and alignment with Shell Energy's business objectives.
- Experience with automation tools, configuration management, and automating manual processes and tasks to improve efficiency and reduce TOIL.
- Excellent analytical, debugging, and methodical problem-solving skills, with the ability to rapidly diagnose and resolve problems to minimize downtime.
