About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Engineer to join our Search Relevance group in Central AI department at Atlassian. The Central AI organisation is responsible for constructing the fundamental infrastructure, data pipeline, frameworks, models, search and other capabilities to expedite AI feature development throughout the entire company.

Your Future Team

The Central AI org is part of the larger Atlassian Intelligence program, which aims to accelerate AI innovation across all our products and platform, provide cohesive AI experiences and setup up an Atlassian AI infrastructure for the future.

Key Responsibilities
  • Pioneer the development of search relevance capabilities to meet the needs of the AI wave.
  • Drive large, complex projects autonomously, from technical design to launch.
  • Contribute to ongoing feature development, specialising in search functionality and be the domain expert on search and relevance related technologies.
  • Solve architecture challenges, apply architectural standards and start using them on new projects.
  • Lead code reviews & documentation as well as take on complex bug fixes, especially on high-risk problems.
  • Partner across engineering teams to tackle company-wide initiatives.
Qualifications
  • 6+ years of software development experience.
  • Deep hands-on experience in improving search relevance or recommendation systems at scale.
  • Strong expertise in Java or equivalent language technology and the ability to write performant production-quality code.
  • Experience building and scaling machine learning models in business applications using large amounts of data.
  • Focus on business practicality and the 80/20 rule; very high bar for output quality, but recognise the business benefit of 'having something now' vs 'perfection sometime in the future'.
  • Agile development mindset, appreciating the benefit of constant iteration and improvement.
