The role of a Racing Animal Welfare Specialist is to ensure the implementation and administration of a rigorous integrity framework for racing animal welfare in Queensland.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and implement animal welfare reforms in response to Government commitments and priorities.
- Oversee animal welfare at racing events, inquiries, and appeals.
- Ensure all animal welfare veterinary services are conducted in accordance with the Rules of Racing and Racing Integrity Act 2016.
- Maintain state, national, and international networks for the veterinary care and regulation of racing horses and greyhounds.
- Represent interests pertaining to animal welfare with key animal welfare bodies.
- Provide authoritative advice on breeding trends and injuries across the three codes of racing (Thoroughbred, Harness, and Greyhound).
- Lead the development, implementation, and review of policies and procedures to ensure compliance with standards and animal welfare legislation.
- Evaluate scientific and other evidence to provide authoritative advice and evidentiary documents on animal physiology and welfare as it relates to prohibited substances.
- Contribute to the coordination and delivery of doping control strategies across the three codes of racing.
- Manage the animal administration program, including securing and maintaining requisite ethics approvals.
- Advise private industry veterinarians and licensees with regard to responsible care of racing animals and appropriate use of therapeutic substances and supplements.
