The Chief Psychiatrist is a senior leadership position within South Australia's mental health services. This role is responsible for shaping mental health care across the state and promoting continuous improvement in service delivery.

As an independent statutory officer, the Chief Psychiatrist works closely with clinicians, consumers, carers, government agencies, and non-government organisations to implement reforms and strengthen services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Policy Leadership: Provide high-level policy advice and direction to stakeholders
  • Standard Setting: Develop and issue standards for patient care that promote excellence and equity
  • Facility Inspection: Conduct regular inspections of public and private mental health facilities to ensure compliance with regulations and standards
  • Team Leadership: Lead multidisciplinary teams across safety and quality, policy and legislation, and suicide prevention
Requirements
  • Qualifications: Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists or equivalent
  • Skills: Strong influencing, negotiation, and communication skills combined with clinical credibility and a collaborative leadership style
  • Experience: Proven ability to lead at a senior level in complex, multidisciplinary environments
