Lead Strategic Communications Professional


Job Description:

The Executive Director, Strategic Communications is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the communication function across Queensland's public health system. This position leads and manages a large multidisciplinary team, providing strategic guidance to the Department of Health and all 16 Hospital and Health Services (HHSs). Reporting to the Deputy Director-General, Corporate Services Division, this role acts as a trusted advisor to senior leaders, including the Director-General, Health Service Chief Executives, Boards, and the Minister for Health and Ambulance Services.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement strategic communications plans that align with Queensland Health's priorities.
  • Advise senior leaders on high-stakes public health messaging and navigate complex issues.
  • Build a high-performing team and drive impactful campaigns across the public health system.
  • Oversee engagement projects, social marketing, and behaviour change initiatives that deliver value for money.
  • Maintain strong relationships across government, private, and community sectors, representing Queensland Health at senior levels.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

Tertiary qualifications in communications, marketing or journalism are highly desirable. Strong expertise in issues management, crisis response, and strategic media engagement is critical. The ideal candidate will be a skilled communicator and collaborator, capable of building strong partnerships across government and health services.
