About the Role

The Royal Zoological Society of SA Inc is seeking an experienced and motivated Animal Care Specialist to join our team as a Primate Keeper. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a diverse range of species and contribute to the conservation and welfare of animals in our care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Undertake daily operations and husbandry duties for primates, ensuring their health and well-being.
  • Contribute to exhibit and enclosure planning, development, design, and maintenance, ensuring animal welfare standards are met and relevant protocols followed.
  • Liaise closely with the Assistant Curator, Curator, and external partners about conservation initiatives and animal management strategies.
  • Participate in the implementation and monitoring of behavioral enrichment and training programs to promote animal welfare and well-being.
  • Deliver engaging and professional presentations to visitors, including animal handling and demonstrations.
  • Work consistently by established safety procedures to ensure animal security, personal safety, and protection of colleagues and the public.
  • Adhere to relevant policies and procedures/standard operating procedures.
Requirements
  • Extensive experience working in a zoological setting, preferably with primates.
  • Previous experience in animal training and excellent presentation skills.
  • Certificate III in Captive Animals or other relevant and acceptable zoo keeping qualifications.
  • Ability to arrange personal work routines and practices to make optimum use of time.
  • Knowledge and experience in the captive management of a range of species, management systems, and conservation programs.
  • High level of communication and interpersonal skills with external stakeholders, peers, staff, volunteers, and the public.
