Backend Engineer - Scalable API Development

We are seeking a skilled Backend Engineer to join our team and contribute to the design, development, and maintenance of scalable APIs that power millions of user interactions.

  • Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and develop scalable backend services using modern frameworks and tools
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, and frontend engineers to deliver end-to-end experiences that have real user impact
  • Evolving and scaling Canva's backend architecture through thoughtful service design, system decomposition, and shared tooling
  • Maintain and improve service health, observability, and incident resilience in partnership with your team
  • Guiding design and code reviews, mentoring peers, and raising the technical bar for your team

Requirements:

  • Highly experienced building complex backend systems in production environments
  • Strong Java fundamentals and able to confidently write production-grade code
  • Comfortable taking ownership of features end-to-end—from architecture to delivery
  • Balances attention to detail with pragmatism, consistently shipping reliable, maintainable code at speed
  • Able to mentor others, offering constructive feedback, and lifting the technical bar for your team
