About People For Wildlife

We are a small conservation charity working with local people and landscapes in Australia and abroad. Our mission is to protect nature and improve the lives of people through scientific research, conservation land management, and nature-based economic opportunities.

Why Work with Us?

Are you passionate about conservation and making a difference in the environment? Do you want to work in a stunning and iconic part of Australia? We are a dedicated team, passionate about what we do, and we need help to bring our big dreams to reality. As a Conservation Ecologist, you will have the opportunity to work with internationally recognised experts and to learn a diverse range of skills that few other employers can provide.

About the Role

As our Conservation Ecologist, you will work closely with the team and with Traditional Owners to undertake research and conservation management work on almost 1 million acres of land in the iconic Cape York Peninsula. Your responsibilities will include:

  1. Designing and implementing scientific research and monitoring programs for various plant and animal species.
  2. Coordinating conservation and land management activities, such as fire management, rainforest rehabilitation, feral animal and weed control.
  3. Training and working with local communities to undertake conservation work.
  4. Capturing photographs and video of your work and collaborating with our communications team to tell our story.
  5. Analysing data, writing reports, and creating GIS maps to inform conservation decisions.
  6. Preparing grant applications and assisting the team with science writing.

You will work closely with Traditional Owners to help create sustainable nature-based business opportunities for local landowners.

About You

We are looking for someone who is passionate about the natural environment and has a strong background in ecology, zoology, or a related field. You should have at least 5 years' experience in ecological research, conservation science, and/or landscape and natural resource management. You should be able to think critically, design and implement monitoring programs, and collect and analyse field data. You should also have proven bushcraft skills and be able to safely and effectively undertake fieldwork in remote areas.

We offer a unique opportunity to live and work in Bamaga, at the tip of the Australia continent. The successful candidate would be provided modest accommodation as part of their remuneration package. Opportunities such as this are rare, and we are looking for someone who is flexible and able to adapt to a remote work environment.
