PhD Scholarship in Microcomb Optical Communications

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD researcher to join our team at Monash University, working on a cutting-edge project in microcomb optical communications. This scholarship opportunity is part of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Optical Microcombs for Breakthrough Science (COMBS), a large dynamic, diverse, and inclusive community that spans across Australia and beyond.

About the Project

Our research focuses on probing the limits of optical microcombs for carrying data. Optical microcombs are a newly invented source of light, producing a precise rainbow of laser-like lines. By imprinting different data streams onto each line, communication bandwidths of many terahertz can be supported by a single compact light source. This can then scale to petabits-per-second by addressing multiple spatial channels.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct research in optical microcombs and their applications in communication systems
  • Develop and implement novel techniques for data processing and transmission using optical microcombs
  • Collaborate with international academics and industry partners to advance the field of optical microcombs
About the Scholarship

The scholarship is valued at $35,013 p.a. (tax-free), with top-ups potentially available. Tuition fees are waived by Monash. The scholarship is open to graduate with honours or masters degrees and runs for 3-3.5 years. The successful candidate will be based at Monash Clayton, located within the metropolitan area of Melbourne.

Requirements
  • Applicants should have a background in Physics, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or related disciplines
  • Experience in optics, photonics, optical communications, and/or communications engineering is highly desirable
