Job Description

The Deputy Principal Solicitor is a leadership role that supports the day-to-day supervision and operation of our legal team.

  • Provide high-quality legal advice and lead complex casework to achieve outstanding results.
  • Mentor and supervise staff solicitors and volunteers, utilizing active matters as learning opportunities to develop their skills.
  • Oversee team operations, including casework approval, advice checking, KPI management, workload management, and ensure regional coverage.
  • Assume Nominated Person responsibilities and higher duties when necessary.
  • Promote compliance, manage legal risk, and foster a positive team culture.
  • Represent the organization at stakeholder forums, legal partnerships, and networks.
  • Lead law reform and community legal engagement activities that promote our vision, mission, and values.
The Ideal Candidate

We seek an individual who can consider their work through the lens of client impact. The successful candidate will hold an unrestricted Practising Certificate and have relevant post-admission experience, including leading complex casework (preferably 5+ years).

  • Be eligible for Blue and Yellow Cards (mandatory criminal history screening)
  • Demonstrate experience in supervising, mentoring, and developing legal staff and volunteers
  • Exhibit excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a positive, adaptable, and collaborative leadership style
  • Ability to travel within the region as required to support remote offices and outreach clinics
  • Bring professionalism, adaptability, and empathy, along with the ability to lead by example and contribute to a trauma-informed, culturally safe, and inclusive workplace
