Aboriginal Mental Health Clinician Role

This role is designed to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who experience severe mental illness, ensuring they access the necessary care and support required for a successful transition from custody to the community.

About the Position

This dedicated position is an opportunity for a qualified professional to make a real difference in the lives of Aboriginal people. To be eligible, applicants must be able to prove their Aboriginal descent through parentage, identification as being an Aboriginal person, and acceptance within the community.

  • The successful candidate will utilise general case management and discipline-specific skills to ensure appropriate access to mental health care and cultural and psychosocial supports for Aboriginal people with serious and enduring mental health needs.
Essential Requirements

To be considered for this role, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • This is an identified Aboriginal Health position, and applicants must be a person of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent.
  • Bachelor degree or higher level relative to the role, including Bachelor Health Science (Mental Health) for Djirruwang Program graduates.
  • Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) for Occupational Therapy or Psychology professions, or eligibility for membership of Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) for Social Work.
  • For Nursing staff - Current unrestricted authority to practice as a registered nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and at least three years full-time equivalent post-registration experience in mental health.

The Community Transitions Team provides prison in-reach services to support people's transitions back into the community. Its aim is to develop mental health care plans, establish necessary therapeutic and cultural supports, and provide follow-up community care to people leaving custody.
