Family Support Specialist - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Families

This is an exciting opportunity to work with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander families in a culturally responsive way, supporting them to maintain stability and connections within their communities.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Provide hands-on support to families to prevent children from entering care or to support reunification, prioritizing the needs of each family member.
  • Collaborate closely with families to develop individualized plans that respect their cultural practices and strengthen family relationships.
  • Ensure children remain safely at home, maintaining stability in care arrangements, or transition back home, addressing any concerns or challenges as they arise.
  • Conduct regular home visits and community outreach to provide targeted guidance and coaching, promoting positive parenting and family engagement.
  • Support families in addressing parenting challenges, conflict resolution, and family strengthening through coaching and mentoring, empowering them to make informed decisions.
  • Maintain strong connections between children and families, respecting cultural heritage and community ties.
  • Advocate on behalf of families to ensure culturally appropriate responses from child protection services and other relevant organizations.
Requirements
  • Possess a relevant qualification in Social Work or Community Services, demonstrating expertise in family support and child protection.
  • Demonstrate a minimum 12 months experience in family support, child protection, or related fields, showcasing ability to navigate complex situations.
  • Evidence strong understanding of culturally responsive and trauma-informed practice, valuing diversity and promoting inclusive environments.
  • Showcase extensive knowledge of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander family structures, cultural practices, and community dynamics, applying this expertise to enhance outcomes for families.
