Research Fellow Position

We are seeking a skilled Research Fellow to join our team and contribute to the Ngura Ninti ('Knowing Home') project.

This fixed-term position is part of a larger research initiative led by renowned experts in Australian history. The project aims to create a four-volume collection of key documents telling Australian history from an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspective, with a regional focus on the South East, including Tasmania, Victoria, and lower New South Wales.

The successful candidate will work closely with the South East regional team, led by Associate Professors Andrew Peters (Swinburne University) and Rebe Taylor (University of Tasmania), focusing on the history of Lutruwita (Tasmania) from the Palawa (Tasmanian Aboriginal) perspective.

About the Project

Ngura Ninti is a pioneering project that involves consultation with Indigenous communities, archival research, and prioritizes Indigenous well-being. It has the potential to make a significant impact on our understanding of Australian history.

The role requires high-level organizational skills, including working autonomously, setting priorities, meeting deadlines, initiating and following up actions with minimal supervision. Experience in historical research, especially in archives, museums, libraries, or galleries, is highly valued.

Key Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the development of a four-volume collection of key documents telling Australian history from an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspective.
  • Work closely with the South East regional team to focus on the history of Lutruwita (Tasmania) from the Palawa (Tasmanian Aboriginal) perspective.
  • Collaborate with Indigenous communities through consultation and archival research.
  • Prioritize Indigenous well-being throughout the project.
Requirements
  • Have, or be working towards, a higher education research qualification or equivalent qualifications such as Indigenous Knowledges and professional research or consultation experience.
  • Experience working successfully with Palawa Community members in formal settings, such as Tasmanian Aboriginal organizations, higher education institutions, galleries, museums, libraries, archives, or similar contexts.
  • High-level organizational skills, including working autonomously, setting priorities, meeting deadlines, initiating and following up actions with minimal supervision.
  • Experience in historical research, especially in archives, museums, libraries, or galleries.
