API Gateway Engineering Leadership

As a seasoned API Gateway Engineering Leader, you will drive the strategic direction and execution for advancing API-first initiatives in our pivotal API Golden Pathways group. This technical role sits within our engineering portfolio, creating a seamless, high-quality, and consistent API ecosystem.

You will be the technical authority and mentor for the Xero Gateway pod, designing, building, and maintaining critical infrastructure underpinning public-facing APIs. Your expertise in cloud networking, container orchestration, and Infrastructure as Code will enable the development of scalable, secure, and resilient solutions.

Key responsibilities include providing technical leadership and strategic direction for the design, development, and operation of the Xero Gateway and associated API ingress solutions. You will also mentor, coach, and develop a high-performing team of engineers, fostering innovation, accountability, and engineering excellence.

In collaboration with product managers, architects, and other engineering leads, you will define priorities, influence cross-team initiatives, and ensure successful delivery of our API platform strategy. As a subject matter expert on cloud networking, API gateways, and infrastructure security, you will drive best practices across the engineering community.

To succeed in this role, you will require a proven track record of mentoring engineers and delivering complex, distributed systems. Strong software development fundamentals, proficiency in languages such as C# or Typescript, and a strategic mindset are essential. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills will enable you to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • Proven experience in a technical leadership role with a track record of mentoring engineers and delivering complex, distributed systems.
  • Deep expertise in cloud networking and infrastructure, particularly with AWS, and a strong command of container orchestration using Kubernetes.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code, using tools like Terraform to build and manage production environments.
  • Strong software development fundamentals with proficiency in languages such as C# or Typescript.
  • A strategic mindset with the ability to solve complex problems, assess technical trade-offs, and make data-informed decisions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
