Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Machine Learning Engineer to join our AI Group, which is responsible for creating the intelligence that powers Canva's AI experiences. Our team works on building conversational experiences that make AI feel intuitive, magical, and useful.

The ideal candidate will have deep experience in building and deploying ML-powered products, particularly in conversational AI. They will be responsible for designing scalable systems that can be used across the product, fine-tuning and evaluating LLM-based models to improve performance, efficiency, and user experience.

This is a deeply hands-on role where you'll be writing code, shaping features, and working side-by-side with software engineers. You'll take ideas from prototype to production, partnering with teams across Canva to deliver ML-driven features that feel seamless and genuinely helpful.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Building a truly flexible and scalable conversational AI platform
  • Fine-tuning and evaluating LLM-based models
  • Contributing to platform engineering across both ML and backend systems
  • Exploring integrations with industry-standard tools and best practices
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to define and deliver impactful AI features

Requirements:

  • Strong bias for action and a product-minded approach to engineering
  • Deep experience building and deploying ML-powered products, particularly in conversational AI
  • Ability to write limited backend production code and solve complex engineering problems
  • Experience influencing roadmap decisions and thriving in ambiguous environments
  • Possessing passion for keeping up with the rapidly evolving AI space
