Key Legal Position

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced lawyer to join our team as the Chief Legal Officer.

About the Role
  • The successful candidate will be responsible for providing strategic and expert legal advice to senior officers, including Ministers and the Director-General.
  • This role involves managing and undertaking a broad range of legal work, including statutory interpretation, judicial review and administrative law issues, corporate governance, compliance, subpoena work, contract work, anti-discrimination claims, human rights, human resources, and privacy issues.
  • The candidate will also be responsible for facilitating representation of the department at inquests, courts and tribunals and providing timely authoritative legal advice to all business branches and units within the department.
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement legal strategies to achieve business outcomes and reduce legal risk.
  • Provide expert legal advice on complex and sensitive matters, often involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Manage and coordinate external legal services, including Crown Law and private firms, to ensure effective and efficient delivery of services.
  • Collaborate with departmental management to identify opportunities for improving policies and practices, reducing legal exposure and developing implementation strategies.
  • Negotiate and influence across all levels of government, industry and other key stakeholders to achieve desired strategic directions and outcomes.
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Demonstrated cultural capability and commitment to developing an inclusive culture that aligns with the Human Rights Act 2019.
  • Proven ability to provide strategic and expert legal advice on complex and sensitive matters.
  • Excellent negotiation and influencing skills, with the ability to collaborate with multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop and implement effective solutions.
  • Ability to manage and coordinate external legal services, including Crown Law and private firms.
