Key Role: Surfacing Artist

The role involves working on all aspects of surfacing, encompassing texture painting, procedural texturing, shading and lookdev, grooming, instancing, UV layout and sculpting.

  • Create high-quality stylized textures to a level of detail necessary for production assets.
  • Develop stylized but physically plausible shading and lookdev while adhering to department standards and conventions.
  • Interpret 2D designs, reference material and artistic direction and translate that into 3D textures and surfacing.
  • Collaborate with the team to ensure assigned work is produced to the expected standard of quality within scheduled timeframes.
  • Assume responsibility for maintaining a consistent style throughout the project.
  • Communicate effectively with the production team and lead artist.

Key Skills:

  • Proven technical and visual skills with an understanding of art and design within an animation environment.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to interpret design down to its fundamentals.
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in high-quality shading, surfacing and texturing.
  • Experience in animated features, feature films (VFX) or high-end episodics.
  • Knowledge of shader creation and implementation will be considered a bonus, as will experience using Houdini.
  • Proficiency with Mari and Maya.
  • A passion for making beautiful-looking CG objects, environments and characters.
