Role of a Mental Health Specialist

The role of a specialist mental health professional in a school setting involves collaboration with students, staff, parents, carers and the broader community. The position entails providing services such as counselling, assessment and intervention to focus on students' mental health and wellbeing.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Individual and group therapeutic interventions with students, parents and families.
  • Cognitive, academic, behavioural, emotional, social and adaptive assessments for students with learning and/or adjustment difficulties.
  • Professional development training for teachers, parents, schools and other professionals in supporting students' mental health and wellbeing.
  • Collaboration with external providers to support student diagnoses and progress monitoring.
  • Response to critical incidents and provision of counselling and support to affected students.
  • Identification of needs and referral, coordination and planning of services for children, parents and families with other stakeholders.
  • Annual professional development activities in line with Psychology Board of Australia registration standards.

Successful candidates will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, be able to work effectively within a team environment and possess a high level of empathy and understanding when working with students, staff and families.

They will also have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, be able to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines. A high level of professionalism and discretion is required at all times.
