This role as a Trade Assistant involves supporting the maintenance of V/Line's Classic Fleet. This includes locomotives, carriages, Sprinter DMUs and new VLocity DMUs.

The V/Line Fleet is crucial for transporting passengers across regional Victoria. As a Trade Assistant, you will play a vital role in ensuring the fleet operates efficiently and safely.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Servicing and Maintenance: Carry out various support tasks to assist with the servicing, testing, repair, overhaul or modification of Velocity and its components.
  • General Duties: Perform general housekeeping duties as required by your supervisor or the tradesperson you are assisting.
  • Fleet Efficiency: Ensure the fleet runs smoothly, adhering to industry standards.
  • Technical Skills: Interpret technical documents such as engineering drawings and operation manuals.
  • Roster Arrangements: Work according to rotating roster arrangements, including weekends and public holidays.
  • Train Component Removal: Remove skirtings and other components from trains.
  • Dismantling and Reassembly: Dismantle train components, reassemble and mount them.
  • Mechanical Operations: Operate forklifts (overhead crane experience or rigging/dogging advantageous).
  • Cleaning and Sanitation: Clean vehicles, including steam cleaning seats, washing and cleaning windows.
  • Pit Cleaning: Wash down pits.
  • Teamwork and Independence: Work effectively in a team environment and independently, requiring minimal supervision.
  • Professional Development: Be willing to undertake further training to achieve additional qualifications if necessary.
Requirements and Qualifications:
  • Hold an apprenticeship qualification in a relevant trade, e.g. Vehicle Body Builder, Car and Wagon Builder, Carpenter, Upholsterer, Painter, Shop-fitter or equivalent.
  • Experience in rail car maintenance is highly valued but not essential.
  • Qualifications in timber, plastics, paint, varnish, upholstery, light gauge metal fabrication and fibreglass or welding would be beneficial.
  • Able to perform various tasks involving physical labour.
