Role Overview

As a Prenatal Caseworker, you will contribute to the Brighter Beginnings initiative, which aims to support expectant parents in ensuring their child’s well-being and reducing the need for out-of-home care. This initiative is a comprehensive government effort designed to provide children with the best possible start in life.

The key objectives of the Brighter Beginnings initiative include:

  • Offering families timely and relevant information to empower their decision-making processes.
  • Enhancing universal services to improve opportunities for all families, while providing targeted support for those in need.
  • Focusing on assessing and supporting expectant parents during pregnancy to mitigate risks and equip them with the necessary skills to care for their newborn.
  • Facilitating connections to appropriate support services and building supportive networks before the child’s birth.
  • Ensuring effective discharge planning and considering parallel planning and assessments as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct assessments and ongoing family engagement with expectant parents to identify and address safety and risk factors for their children.
  • Advocate for families to engage with relevant services and participate in collaborative meetings.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, particularly within NSW Health.
  • Collaborate with NSW Health to promote and implement the Pregnancy Family Conferencing Model.
  • Focus on assessing and supporting expectant parents to reduce risks and prepare them for the arrival of their baby.
  • Plan next steps for families by connecting them with suitable support services.
  • Ensure clear discharge planning and consider parallel planning as necessary.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate for the Prenatal Caseworker position will possess confidence, curiosity, and resilience.

Essential qualifications include:

  • Identification as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
  • Experience in child protection assessment and case planning, with the ability to engage families in developing actionable plans.
  • Proven experience in supporting voluntary clients through complex service systems.
  • Strong relationship-building skills, particularly with NSW Health and preservation services.
  • Previous experience with prenatal cases is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • A valid driver's license and a paid working with children clearance number.
