About the Role

The Weed and Pest Officer plays a crucial role in ensuring the effective and efficient delivery of annual roadside weed and pest control in accordance with the Northern Grampians Shire Council's Roadside Weeds and Pests Program.

Key Responsibilities
  • Control and Restrict Weed and Pest Spread: Identify, monitor, and treat infestations and outbreaks of priority weeds and pests throughout the Northern Grampians Shire Council area.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Establish and maintain sound working relationships with key stakeholders, including Landcare groups, land managers, and government agencies, to identify local issues and collaborate on solutions.
  • Funding and Resource Development: Investigate and pursue further funding streams and resources to enable future works on Council-controlled Crown land that complement landcare efforts.
  • Program Planning and Implementation: Carry out forward planning with the Coordinator Environment & Community Safety to establish and update programs as required, considering natural resource management, biodiversity, flora, fauna, and ecosystem values.
  • Contractor Supervision and Monitoring: Engage, supervise, and monitor contractors to complete approved projects and programs within budgets and timeframes.
  • Reporting and Compliance: Prepare progress reports to relevant agencies and work within defined project budgets and timeframes to implement approved funded projects and programs, ensuring compliance with all relevant process control documents.
  • Record Keeping and Safety: Maintain accurate and detailed records of work activities, including data entry into Council's computer systems, and ensure compliance with safety and environmental controls.
Selection Criteria
  • Passion for Environmental Conservation: A passion for the natural environment with knowledge and experience in weed and pest control.
  • Project Delivery Experience: Experience in delivering projects and programs.
  • Communication Skills: Well-developed written and verbal communication skills.
  • Qualifications: Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science (Environmental Management and Sustainability) or a related field are desirable.
