The Role: Prison Gate Outreach Team Member

The aim of the Prison Gate ministry is to facilitate good visits for incarcerated people. This is a ministry of encouragement and support to those visiting loved ones in correctional centres.

  • Help new visitors get oriented to the process
  • Provide a listening ear for those needing to talk
  • Offer a smile and company for those waiting alone
  • Provide referral information about other supports that may be useful to them or their loved one in custody

We may also offer toys for children, if available.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Empathise and actively listen to visitors
  • Provide encouragement and hope (pastoral care)
  • Pray for visitors or the prisoners, if requested
  • Adhere to Correctional Centre requirements and requests
  • Ensure all people and the workplace are safe by following safe work practices
  • Keep children safe by following our child safe policies and code of conduct
Requirements

  • No formal qualifications are required
  • Active listening and communication skills are necessary
Background Checks and Training

A police check will be required due to the nature of this role. You will also need to complete online training modules, including:

  • Foundational training (introduction to our values, code of conduct, work-safe and child-safe practices)
  • Safeguarding training
  • Prison Gate specific role training (approximately 4 hours, face-to-face)

Additionally, we take Work Health Safety and well-being seriously. Key considerations include following lifting procedures/limitations, remaining within designated areas, and implementing COVID requirements.
