We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Mechanical Engineer to join our team at the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) for an industrial placement opportunity. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a project that involves the development and testing of stress rigs for materials science and engineering applications.
Key Responsibilities- Assess the current portfolio of deformation rigs available at ENGIN-X and identify capability gaps.
- Perform a market survey to determine the availability of commercial deformation rigs that meet the requirements of the project.
- Develop a conceptual design for the identified solution(s) in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
- Work with stakeholders to develop a plan for targeted hardware acquisitions to maximize scientific output.
- Currently enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and returning to university/studies to complete your undergraduate degree following the placement.
- Required or have requested to take an industrial placement year.
- Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement.
- Able to commence employment in summer 2025.
- Good understanding of properties of metals and of mechanical engineering.
- Familiarity with mechanical loading tests of materials.
- Interest in (non-destructive) testing methods.
- Good communication skills for working together with numerous stakeholders.
