Job Role:

The primary focus of this position is to provide legal services in criminal law matters.

  • Represent clients by preparing, instructing counsel, and appearing for accused persons in general criminal law matters, including the Magistrates Court and District Court sentences.
  • Offer duty lawyer services in the Magistrates and Children's Courts and appear on higher court call-overs and mentions.
  • Provide legal information and advice to clients and members of the public.
  • Support team members and other Legal Aid staff with inquiries related to specific areas of law.
  • Achieve outcomes through self-management and with supervision from senior legal practitioners as required.
  • Collaborate on submissions that support policy, procedure, law reform, and legal service delivery initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain networks with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to team planning and suggest improvements to work practices.
Required Skills and Qualifications:

You possess knowledge and experience independently preparing, representing, and advocating in criminal law and related matters.

  • Knowledge of practice and procedure in relevant areas of law and ethical standards.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders, including clients with complex needs, using trauma-informed practice principles.
