About Our Cyber Security Role

The Westpac Detection and Response team operates within our Information Security Group, responsible for monitoring and detecting cyber threats targeting the group or its customers.

We seek an experienced leader to manage and mentor a team, sharing knowledge and expertise to oversee SOC operations. This role ensures the operating effectiveness of day-to-day activities, enhances capability, and boosts productivity.

The ideal candidate will have technical knowledge and leadership skills to coordinate efforts, propose initiatives, provide technical expertise, and contribute to industry or government security projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate SOC operations for efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Lead team efforts to enhance capability and productivity.
  • Assume incident response lead for cyber security incidents when required, coordinating resources and teams.
  • Propose and champion initiatives that improve security posture.
  • Provide technical guidance to the team.
  • Mentor junior staff, sharing knowledge and experience.
  • Participate in industry or government security initiatives.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of experience in Cyber Security, with 2+ years coaching or mentoring in an operational environment.
  • Experience in IT security operations in a large organisation.
  • Cyber Incident Management experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of SIEM, Threat Hunting, and EDR tools.
  • An analytical mindset and ability to assess risk based on available data and context.
  • Strong communication skills and experience communicating with senior stakeholders.
  • Exceptional critical thinking and attention to detail.
