PhD Research Opportunity in Biomechanics and Precision Technology for Hip Osteoarthritis Treatment
2 months ago
Project Overview Osteoarthritis (OA) is a prevalent chronic joint disease in Australia, affecting approximately 1 in 5 people. Current non-surgical treatments often prove ineffective, resulting in 60% of people with hip OA undergoing joint replacement within 3 years. This project aims to test the efficacy of a 'smart' therapeutic intervention for hip OA in a natural environment, utilising advanced wearable technology and artificial intelligence to calculate hip loads in real-time.
Research Objectives The objectives of this project include:
- Evaluating the efficacy of a personalised load-modification intervention for individuals with OA
- Characterising how people with hip OA load their hip in a natural environment
- Identifying muscle forces that underpin hip loads during activities driving symptom worsening and disease progression
Qualifications and Requirements To be considered for this PhD research opportunity, applicants must hold a bachelor's degree with first-class honours or a master's degree, incorporating a significant research component in biomechanics, biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, human movement science, kinesiology, or related fields. Essential skills include knowledge in rigid-multibody dynamics (OpenSim) and computer programming skills (MATLAB, Python, or C++).
English Language Proficiency Requirements International applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency by meeting one of the following criteria:
- A minimum overall band score of 6.5 on the IELTS (Academic) with no band score less than 6.0
- A minimum score of 550 on the paper-based TOEFL, including a score of no less than 5.0 on the TWE
- A score of 79 on the internet-based (iBT) TOEFL with no sub-score less than 19
Griffith University Griffith University is a reputable institution committed to delivering high-quality education and research opportunities.
