Staff Backend Engineer, Search Quality

We are seeking a skilled Staff Backend Engineer to join our team and play a key role in improving search and recommendation quality across the platform.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the engineering strategy and execution to enhance search and recommendation features.
  • Design and own the architecture of scalable, low-latency systems that power discovery features.
  • Represent Discovery Understanding Engineering in collaborations with product managers, designers, and other teams.
  • Translate product goals into measurable backend solutions, run experiments, and refine features based on data.
  • Guide and mentor other engineers, ensuring high standards in software development and experimentation practices.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot search performance issues to ensure reliable and performant services.
Requirements:
  • Deep experience building and scaling backend systems with a focus on search and recommendations, or similar domains requiring experiment-driven iteration.
  • Proven track record of delivering measurable improvements to discovery systems.
  • Proficient in Java at a staff level, and have a strong foundation in data structures and system design.
  • Thrives in a data-driven, fast-paced environment and enjoys owning problems from idea to execution.
  • Led large-scale projects or initiatives and enjoys mentoring other engineers.
  • Familiar with cloud platforms and containerised services (e.g., AWS, Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Brings curiosity, communication skills, and a passion for empowering users through world-class product experiences.
