About the Role

The Data Analyst will assist in conducting detailed analysis into specific areas of concern that will often span across multiple systems, as well as assist in managing the Seaworthiness Activity Master Plan.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake analysis to define, structure, solve and provide advice on complex data problems, including gathering and exploring data and meta-data from a variety of sources
  • Understand and utilise analytical tools and techniques to define, structure and solve complex problems
  • Develop and test user interfaces/experiences to achieve business outcomes
  • Prepare, publish, and provide advice on complex data-based briefs, reports and advanced visualisations to inform Defence decision making
  • Be responsible for the ethical use of data and interpreting and complying with legislation, Defence policy and regulatory frameworks including data management requirements
  • Build and sustain effective relationships and negotiate with customers and key stakeholders to deliver tailored recommendations
  • Resolve problems using knowledge, professional judgement and initiative to identify and recommend alternative courses of action
  • Be accountable for accurate and timely completion of work and sharing own expertise with others and guiding less experienced employees
  • Develop and maintain business domain knowledge, data analysis and visualisation skills and awareness of trends
  • Work collaboratively, operate as an effective team member and actively participate in organisational activities

About our Team

The Office of the Defence Seaworthiness Regulator (ODSwR) is an independent Defence Regulator. The ODSwR is tasked with managing the Defence Seaworthiness Management System (DSwMS), a Defence-wide maritime risk management system. It does this through:

  • Scanning the maritime environment and advocating on behalf of Defence
  • Providing a regulatory framework to manage maritime risks
  • Assuring maritime risks are proactively considered and controlled
  • Monitoring trends across the Defence Enterprise and providing support to the Defence maritime community through education and advice

What We're Looking For

  • Strong problem-solving skills, knowledge of data analysis tools and languages and a good understanding of data analysis processes
  • Interest in automating complex tasks
  • Experience working with Python/R and/or Power BI/Tableau for data analysis
  • Strong data storytelling skills and the ability to communicate complex insights in a practical fashion to non-technical stakeholders
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a cross-functional team to deliver improved outcomes for the Defence Maritime Community
  • Ability to establish clear plans and timeframes, and respond positively to change and uncertainty
  • High-level written and oral communication, agility and flexibility while taking a risk-based and flexible approach to delivering outcomes
