Job Description

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Features Editor to lead the commissioning, editing, and delivery of compelling stories that captivate our audience both online and in print.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record as a features writer and editor, with a strong portfolio of published work. They will possess exceptional writing, commissioning, editing, and communication skills, as well as a deep understanding of current affairs, both nationally and internationally.

The Features Editor will play a crucial role in shaping the content of our daily features and the Perspective section of AFR Weekend. Key responsibilities include overseeing the commissioning and editing of news features, working closely with reporters, editors, and other section leaders to allocate writers and develop engaging story angles, and maintaining a keen sense of current political, economic, business and cultural matters.

The Features Editor will also be responsible for sourcing and producing stories from syndication partners to diversify and enrich our content offerings, maximising digital production and presentation, and collaborating with the AFR Weekend editor and contributing to the planning process to ensure a cohesive package for publication.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a features writer and editor, with a strong portfolio of published work.
  • Exceptional writing, commissioning, editing, and communication skills.
  • A deep understanding of current affairs, both nationally and internationally.
  • Well-developed knack for ensuring the right mix of content that balances light and shade.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced newsroom environment.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
