We strive to safeguard both human and animal health by preventing and mitigating plant and animal pests and diseases. This involves maintaining a high level of animal welfare standards and ensuring access to interstate markets, which are vital for Queensland's thriving primary industries.
The Animal Biosecurity and Welfare team supports these efforts by preventing, preparing for, responding to, and recovering from diseases threatening livestock industries and maintaining market access.
- Our team collaborates with the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) in responding to biosecurity emergencies and leads the DPI response to achieve outcomes consistent with the Department's strategic direction for leadership in animal welfare.
This includes applying specialist knowledge and skills in veterinary pathology to deliver effective veterinary diagnostic services, leading a team of veterinary pathologists and support staff to deliver advanced diagnostic and surveillance testing, and fostering strong working relationships with external stakeholders at the national, state, and local levels.
