About Us:

North Queensland Women's Legal Service is a community-driven legal organization established by women for women. Since 1996, we have focused on improving women's access to justice and advocating for systemic change based on women's experiences.

Our clients are primarily women, often mothers and primary caregivers, who face financial constraints and are frequently victims of domestic violence. We have seen a growing demand for our services, particularly from women in rural and regional areas.

As the need for our support increases, so does our team, eager to leverage their expertise to effect meaningful change in the lives of women and their children. In response to this demand, we have recently secured additional funding to enhance our services.

We are currently seeking full-time Family Lawyers and a Specialist Child Protection Lawyer to contribute to our mission. The role may require travel for community outreach, legal education, and other initiatives.

Your Impact:

As a Family or Child Protection Lawyer, you will deliver high-quality, trauma-informed legal services in family law, domestic violence, child protection, and related areas.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Providing legal advice and ongoing case management
  • Offering duty lawyer services
  • Conducting community legal education
  • Contributing to law reform and policy initiatives
  • Engaging in networking and community development

You will also ensure adherence to professional indemnity claims prevention procedures and other operational requirements.

Note: An open driver's license and a completed criminal history check are prerequisites for this role.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will be a qualified legal practitioner with a strong foundation in family and child protection law, ready to engage in work that extends beyond individual cases to foster broader social change.

Your qualifications should include:

  • Eligibility to obtain a practicing certificate as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland and the High Court of Australia
  • A deep commitment to advocating for women facing family and domestic violence or involved in the Child Protection system
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills to effectively engage with diverse stakeholders
  • Ability to integrate trauma-informed practices into legal advice and casework.

North Queensland Women's Legal Service values diversity and encourages applications from individuals who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, or individuals living with disabilities.

Benefits:

Enjoy a competitive salary of approximately $85,000 - $106,000, based on experience and qualifications, plus superannuation. You will be part of a dedicated team of professionals committed to social justice and human rights.

Additional benefits include:

  • Negotiable relocation assistance
  • Salary-sacrificing options to enhance your take-home pay
  • 17.5% leave loading for improved rest periods
  • Three extra days off between Christmas and New Year
  • Access to an Employee Assistance Program for your wellbeing
  • Opportunities for professional development to support your growth alongside the organization.

This role presents a fulfilling opportunity to utilize your legal expertise in advocating for women and children affected by family and domestic violence. Your daily contributions will significantly impact our community and influence law reform and policy initiatives.

Next Steps:

If you are passionate about social justice and eager to apply your legal skills in alignment with your values, we encourage you to consider this opportunity.
