About Us:

North Queensland Women's Legal Service is a community-driven legal organization created by women for women. Since our establishment, we have focused on improving women's access to legal services and driving change within the justice system based on women's experiences.

Our primary clients are women, often mothers and primary caregivers, who face financial challenges and are frequently victims of domestic violence. We have seen a growing demand for our services, particularly from women in rural and regional areas.

As our client base expands, so does our team, all committed to leveraging their expertise to positively impact the lives of women and their children. Recent funding increases allow us to meet this demand through innovative approaches.

We currently have a full-time opportunity for Family Lawyers and a Specialist Child Protection Lawyer to contribute to our mission.

Your Impact:

In your role as a Family or Child Protection Lawyer, you will deliver high-quality, trauma-informed legal services in family law, domestic violence, child protection, and related areas.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Providing legal advice and ongoing case management
  • Offering duty lawyer services
  • Conducting community legal education
  • Contributing to law reform, policy initiatives, and publication efforts
  • Engaging in networking and community development

You will also ensure adherence to professional indemnity claims prevention protocols and other operational requirements.

Note: An open driver's license and a criminal history check will be required prior to commencing the role.

Qualifications and Skills:

We are looking for a qualified legal practitioner with a focus on family and child protection law, eager to engage in work that extends beyond traditional case management and contributes to broader social change.

Your qualifications should include:

  • Credentials as a legal practitioner and eligibility for a practicing certificate in Queensland and the High Court of Australia
  • A strong commitment to advocating for women facing family and domestic violence or involved in the Child Protection system
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach to working with diverse stakeholders
  • The ability to integrate trauma-informed practices into all legal advice and casework.
