Job Description:

The role of an Education Support Specialist is crucial in creating a positive and inclusive learning environment within the Science Department. This position plays a pivotal part in supporting educational services provided to students, working closely with teachers, staff, and students to foster a collaborative atmosphere.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Preparation and setup of equipment for classes
  • Clear away equipment and materials after use and ensure they are maintained in a safe, clean, and ready-to-use condition
  • Maintain supplies of personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure regular washing/drying of lab coats
  • Trialling of experiments when required
  • Provide guidance and assistance to teachers/student teachers when choosing and running practical activities
  • Perform routine administrative tasks as needed
  • Liaise with service providers when necessary
  • Record and maintain accurate inventory of stock
  • Maintain equipment in and out of the classroom and inform the Science Domain Leader of equipment requiring maintenance
  • Procure and collect materials and equipment from external sources
  • Support the cleaning and maintenance of Science rooms, breakout room, and preparation areas
  • Participate in and assist with whole-school events, including Science-related activities
  • Assist with camps as required
  • Organise laboratory equipment and materials for science classes, conduct experiments, and suggest alternative technical methods as appropriate
  • Maintain an equitable distribution system of laboratory equipment and materials across all science classes
  • Maintain Science storage and preparation areas in an organised manner and according to Health and Safety Guidelines, ensuring secure access
  • Ensure adequate supplies of chemicals, biological supplies, and other equipment and materials
  • Prepare chemical solutions, dissection materials, and other laboratory reagents according to Health and Safety Guidelines
  • Provide support to teachers in practical classes as needed
  • Take care of animals and plants within the Science area and maintain their designated space
  • Collect and maintain living specimens (in accordance with regulations), collect off-campus scientific and field samples as required
  • Assist with Science Domain budget preparation and liaise with the Domain Leader to ensure records are up-to-date
  • Support primary school Science and Technology promotion initiatives, including preparing rooms for orientation days and major Science events
  • Assist with Science curriculum planning and excursions
  • Maintain, service, and repair laboratory apparatus and equipment
  • Conduct regular chemical and equipment checks and assist with the annual Science stocktake
  • Prepare solutions, stains, and media for use in the laboratory
  • Liaise with organisations and industries for resource acquisition purposes
  • Liaise with local schools to share resources
  • Be an active member of a relevant professional association
  • Perform cleaning tasks within the Science area
  • Encourage effective implementation of experiments through structured experimental preparation
  • Provide teacher support and instruction for electronic equipment usage, such as TVs
  • Liaise with the Domain Leader to ensure the materials and equipment register is current
  • Liaise with the Domain Leader to ensure up-to-date records
  • Label chemicals for storage and classroom use
  • Liaise with teachers and students
  • Perform other duties as directed by the Principal
