The Housing/Shelter Support Worker will participate directly in identifying clients' problems, needs, and risks. They will plan and conduct individual counselling sessions using basis one-on-one counselling techniques, providing specific basic life skills building in problem areas. The worker will be involved in the engagement and provision of services from intake procedures and programs to help residents/shelter users succeed in their goals.

The Housing/Shelter Support Worker will advocate for residents, resolving difficult or sensitive issues or problems, responding to medical emergencies including overdoses, and maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for a marginalized population. They will assist with all aspects of resident support plan development and delivery of services, developing rapport and trusting yet professional relationships with residents. The worker will perform wellness checks, set up shelters upon arrival, clean up before end of shift, distribute harm reduction supplies, personal hygiene supplies, cleaning supplies, meals, etc. to residents, and engage them in activities such as room cleans, clean out vacant rooms.

The worker will also assist residents with applications and referrals, develop short-term intervention plans within program guidelines by one-on-one support, consult with Site Supervisor and/or outside agencies, evaluate intervention plan effectiveness, report on clients' progress, discuss related concerns with Supervisor, gather information relevant to clients' problems, needs, and risks, review gathered information, identify problems, needs, and risks, plan and prepare basic individual counselling sessions using active listening, conflict resolution, psycho-educational group methods to resolve identified problems, needs, and risks. They will maintain active files for each assigned resident, outlining services provided, provide information on referrals to other community service providers, resources, and professionals as required, use various influential techniques guided by social work standards and methods to clients resistant to support and intervention.

Key responsibilities include assisting with laundry, maintaining on-site laundry rooms, supporting residents in developing independent life skills such as household management, medication management, socialization, money management, decision-making, time management, etc., maintaining knowledge of laws and legislation affecting residents, utilizing de-escalation skills to mitigate challenging situations, maintaining professional boundaries while displaying empathy and compassion, responding to medical emergencies including overdoses, providing emergency first aid, performing CPR, liaising with partner agencies and professionals/support teams, accompanying residents to meetings and appointments, completing Incident Reports according to procedure, ensuring that violations of the program agreement are addressed and followed up on, collaborating with team on engaging residents, recognizing and utilizing each team member's strengths to provide best support for residents, overseeing room inspections and follow-ups, ensuring staff office(s) is/are clean and tidy, participating in cross-agency working groups as required, working alongside volunteers, cleaning rooms when residents move out, plugging toilets and dealing with leaks, reporting maintenance needs and requests, assisting in custodial and maintenance tasks, collecting statistical information for reporting requirements, being aware of critical incident report procedures and following health and safety policies and procedures, working with Occupational Health and Safety team to ensure staff work safely, and referring media requests to Director of Communication.
