Senior Legal Practitioner - Director of Public Prosecutions

The Northern Territory Government seeks an exceptional, senior legal practitioner to fill the significant role of Director of Public Prosecutions.

This position is responsible for the prosecution of all indictable offences in the Supreme Court and summary offences in the Darwin Local Court. The Director of Public Prosecutions also provides a witness and victim support service.

A highly experienced legal practitioner with admission of at least 10 years is sought. The ideal candidate will possess:

  • a strong ability to operate with professional integrity and make sound decisions at the highest level;
  • a capacity to communicate effectively with the public, judicial officers, police, other government agencies, and the Attorney-General;
  • substantial practical experience in criminal law and highly developed legal and advocacy skills; and
  • proven effective leadership and management capabilities.

The Director of Public Prosecutions plays a critical role in ensuring justice is served in the Northern Territory.

About the Role:

This is a key appointment that requires a senior legal practitioner who can provide leadership and direction to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • prosecuting all indictable offences in the Supreme Court and summary offences in the Darwin Local Court;
  • providing a witness and victim support service;
  • leading and managing a team of lawyers and support staff;
  • communicating effectively with the public, judicial officers, police, and other government agencies.

Key Selection Criteria:

The following criteria are essential:

  • Admission to practice as a lawyer in Australia for at least 10 years;
  • Substantial practical experience in criminal law;
  • Highly developed legal and advocacy skills;
  • Proven effective leadership and management capabilities.
