Job Opportunity

This is a mid-senior level full-time role within the NSW Department of Education, supporting schools and corporate offices in navigating the law to put students at the centre of decision-making.

About the Role

The Principal Legal Officer Liability co-leads and manages the Liability team in providing advice and conducting strategic litigation services on behalf of the department while upholding the highest ethical standards and model litigant principles.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Managing and developing people, motivating staff, and developing capability and potential in others.
  • Providing quality independent legal advice and managing legal risks.
  • Co-leading and managing the Liability team, including supervision of staff, allocation of resources and workload, monitoring business and staff performance, and providing strategic direction to create efficiencies and enhance and motivate staff.
Requirements:
  • A current unrestricted NSW legal practising certificate (or ability to apply for an unrestricted practising certificate).
  • A proven ability in managing, motivating and developing staff so their potential is maximised.
  • Knowledge and experience in dealing with civil litigation and liability claims.

An experienced leader and solicitor who can manage and develop people, motivate staff, and develop capability and potential in others will be ideal for this role. They will work collaboratively with others, valuing their contribution, and communicate effectively and clearly, actively listening to others and responding with understanding and respect.

They will deliver results through the efficient use of resources and a commitment to quality outcomes, and understand technology and use available technologies to maximise efficiencies and effectiveness.

Optimising business outcomes by managing people and resources effectively to achieve public value will be key to success in this role.
